Bio
I’ve been bumbling about in the art world since I was a little oik, slipping off to art college to rack up a degree in Graphic Design, knocking out a few albums covers, a commercial here and there and the odd 40ft mural. I even showed some maturity at one point and trained as a teacher of Art & Design. The most recent and relevant part of my story, however, began towards the end of 2018 when I was reading up about the CPSA and found myself intrigued by the rules of their International Show. I hadn’t come across anything quite so restrictive before but a browse through previous entries opened my eyes to how powerful a medium pure coloured pencil can be. My first effort was to replicate an image of an owl that I’d just completed on an under-painted background - but this time round I used nothing other than the pencils themselves. And I really surprised myself with what I was able to achieve with a little ingenuity… and a very good eraser… and a significant sacrifice of my pencil stock… A new direction had been found.
At around the same time, I was spending a lot of time in my attic. My mum had died the previous year and most of her house had ended up in my house. I went up to the attic with the sole intention of sorting it out. But there I stayed… (though I’ve been out since). The experience caused so many long-dormant memories to surface, produced so much visual and tactile information that I immediately wanted to use, and swamped me in ideas. I’m therefore still on that mission to explore what I can do with pure CP but I’m doing it through my ‘Ghosts of the Past’ series. I certainly don’t feel I ever got to the end of mixing CP with other media - not by any means - it’s just that I’ve been so busy playing with my pencils that I haven’t had time to do anything else!
